Dwight
Lyman Moody (1837-99) American evangelist. Born in Northfield,
Mass.
A shopkeeper in Boston, he moved in 1856 to Chicago,
where he became engaged
in missionary work. He joined Ira David Sankey (1840-1908)
in 1870 and they
visited England for the first time in 1873. Moody preaching
and Sankey singing,
eventually returning to America to continue their work.
